Fairfield Methodist Church
Our Church is located on the north side of Buxton in the oldest part of Fairfield, which was originally a sizeable town in its own right, but became a suburb of Buxton as it expanded with the coming of the railway in the 1860s. Many workers who came to Buxton at that time for work created by the newly opened railway settled in Fairfield.
The present church is 26 years old but there has been a Methodist presence in Fairfield since 1783 when John Wesley preached here. Our church is of modern design, built on the site of the former large Victorian Church and is within Wesley House premises, primarily lived in by older people. The Church is leased to us until 2085 by Johnnie Johnson Housing Association, although all costs of maintenance are the responsibility of the Church.
The Church building consists of the main multi-purpose Church with removable seating, a separate meeting room and modern kitchen all of which are in excellent condition. In 2005 it was necessary for us to replace the roof and at the same time we also upgraded the ceiling and lighting system. In 2010 the heating system was modernised.
The Church has weekly morning services with additional evening joint services twice a month with the local Parish Church St Peter's. Relationship between our two Churches is excellent. Average number of congregation in a morning service is about 15 and in the evening about 12.
Pilgrim Group. Is a monthly evening meeting with speakers from a variety of interests. This meeting attracts older people who are not other wise involved in the Church.
Ladies Tuesday Club is a monthly evening meeting providing interesting topics and fellowship.
The Fairfield Women's Institute meets monthly on our premises with up to sixty ladies. There is no direct connection with the Church.
Until 2010 we hosted three luncheon clubs of older people providing accommodation at a low cost. Unfortunately due to the economic climate all three have now been suspended by the organisers (Social Services & Volunteer bureau).
For many years we did have a Mother & Toddler Group staffed by members of the Church. Regrettably, with the change in funded nursery placement elsewhere, this finished.
The Church building has held "Messy Church "and other events including a week day "Sunday School" for young people.
Our Church has a special affinity with "Action for Children" and "Christian Aid" and this continues.
Pastoral Care is an important part of our Church community.
Our Church many years ago identified the value of a virtual Church and its website which can be found at this link has become increasingly important.
Our Church is less than half a mile from the "Fairfield Estate" a growing area which includes some areas of deprivation. Fairfield is a complex area with housing built, after the late nineteenth century development, in most decades since the 1930's and with each area seemingly having little in common with each other.
The appointment of a Deacon two years ago has led the Church to rethink its mission and how it can more positively interact with the people on the estate. The possibility of developing a Christian Centre, less than half a mile away on the "Fairfield Estate", is a challenge to be grasped, but also leads to concern about the possible consequential closure of our Church.
