Harpur Hill Methodist Church
When the Chapel opened in 1889, Harpur Hill was a small village of less than 100 houses, mainly for quarry workers in the limestone industry. This has changed completely with the building of Council and private housing estates at both ends of the village. Harpur Hill has now become a suburb of Buxton, more houses are being built at present and more development will take place in the coming years. The site of the old High Peak Campus (of the University of Derby) is up for sale for residential housing.
The Chapel stands in the middle of the village and is the only one in the Circuit with a burial ground.
Although we are a small congregation, the local community look to the Chapel in times of need.
We have a hall which accommodates 50 people. It is used regularly by the Women's Institute, a local Fun Bunch, The Rainbows and Harpur Hill Residents' Association Friends Group.
The Anglican Church - St James - is just down the road. We have started to hold some united services, and we have a joint Community Coffee Morning which is held in the Chapel on the third Thursday of each month.
Opposite the Chapel is the village War Memorial, a grade II listed monument made from a rough hewn piece of limestone.
The local Primary School is on Trent Avenue. There is a Harpur Hill Residents' Association which meets monthly. There is also a very active Scout Group with about 70 boys over the three sections. For over 20 years they met in the hall at the Chapel, but have now moved into their own Scout Hall, and continue their good work with young people.
